Wessel Albertse

We are thrilled to introduce our Honours graduate, Wessel Albertse, an Art Director and lecturer with over 15 years of experience in motion graphics, entertainment, and live events. Wessel’s Honours project, a VR short film titled Convergence, was recently selected for the prestigious Festival of International Virtual & Augmented Reality Stories (FIVARS) in Toronto, celebrating its world premiere in October 2024.

Wessel’s career spans local and international campaigns, including commercials, brand communications, and live events like the South African Music Awards, MTV, and Miss South Africa. He continues to work as a motion graphics artist and director in the broadcast and live events industry while sharing his expertise as a lecturer at Cape Town Creative Academy.

Wessel recently completed his BA Honours degree in Visual Communication, and his VR film Convergence—a speculative depiction of a dystopian future in Cape Town—has garnered international attention. The film explores the critical intersection of humanity, technology, and nature. Inspired by Rosi Braidotti’s convergence theory, the film invites viewers on an immersive journey to consider the impacts of our current decisions on the future of the planet.

Wessel shared his excitement about the film’s selection, saying, “What an honour to be among such innovative storytellers and visionary creatives at this year’s FIVARS festival. A big thank you to all the amazing people at Cape Town Creative Academy for their support throughout this project.”

The film is set to have its local premiere at the Playtopia Festival in Cape Town in December 2024
